Peter Hawkins’s practice focuses on commercial litigation.

Prior to joining the firm, Peter practiced at Bryan Cave on a variety of litigation matters including antitrust and fiduciary litigation. While at Allied World National Insurance Company, he handled professional liability claims as a claims analyst.

He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law where he served as Executive Editor for the Journal of Social Policy and the Law, participated in the International Human Rights Clinic, and practiced as a legal intern at the Legal Resources Foundation in Kenya on a grant from the Public Interest Law Association.

He earned a B.A. in Literature with a minor in Anthropology magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Purchase.

Before law school, Peter worked as a director and dramaturg for theater productions in New York.

 

Representative Cases

Assisted in defending Snohomish County from claims arising from the fatal March 2014 Oso Landslide. All claims by all plaintiffs against the County were dismissed in the trial court, and the plaintiffs’ appeals are currently pending in the Washington Court of Appeals.

Assisted with the successful defense of a complex contract claim on behalf of a Seattle technology company. After a five-week trial, the jury found in favor of HLFT’s client on five of six claims and rejected the plaintiff’s claim for millions of dollars in damages. HLFT then prevailed on all post-trial motions, with the Court reversing the one adverse jury verdict and awarding awarded our client over $2 million in attorneys’ fees and costs.

Assisted in obtaining a seven-figure recovery for property damage to commercial real estate harmed by dewatering operations performed in connection with a public works project. The case was settled at mediation without incurring the business distraction and expenses of normal litigation.
